Fausia S. Abdul recently published the article "Woman, Care, and the Weight of a Colonial Legacy" in Nieuw Wij, including interviews with Desiree Hooi, Cindy de Koning, and Legien Warsosemito. It focuses on the impact of the colonial past on how women's health is perceived and experienced.
This piece is part of our series "Our HERitage Speaks"—a collaboration with Nieuw Wij, in which we reflect on the continuing effects of the colonial past. In this series, we regularly publish contributions in which interviewees reveal the connections between slavery, indentured labor, and the contemporary experiences of Dutch Caribbean residents.
We have now published twelve articles in Nieuw Wij. In these contributions, we feature not only researchers but also participants and team members who share their personal perspectives and family histories. In this way, we connect academic research with lived experiences and create space for a multi-voiced conversation about our shared past. With 'Our HERitage Speaks' we aim to bring together knowledge and voices to contribute to a more inclusive awareness, thereby breaking down stereotypes and simultaneously creating a greater understanding of the complex legacy of the colonial past.
