Why a social professional / coach?
As we approach this research with care, we have learned that even if participants think they have processed the past, they may face unexpected challenges. Family relationships, intergenerational trauma, or other emotions can emerge during the research process. Based on insights from the past months, we have recruited a coach for the final phase of the project. Mark Maat offers individual sessions to participants to support them in a safe and caring environment, so that they can explore their personal and collective history in a responsible and resilient way.
Mark Maat MA
Social professional and coach
Born in Curaçao, Mark moved to the Netherlands as a teenager with his family. He is a Master of Arts graduate in Social & Community Studies and specialises in themes such as empowerment, force-orientated approaches, and methodologies such as positive psychology, narrative therapy, family conferences, and protective coats.
His extensive work experience includes positions in social care, homeless and homeless care, youth care, outpatient mental health care for immigrants and refugees, and support for social neighbourhood teams. He also worked in specialised time-out facilities for Surinamese and Antillean youth.
Because of his interest in the history of his mother's native country, Suriname, the history of his native island, Curaçao, and outstanding questions about family history, especially on his mother's side, Mark has always been interested in transatlantic colonial history, the history of slavery and the possible impact that has had.
Since 2023, Mark has focused on his broad areas of interest, including Caribbean history and literature, law, genealogy and family history, and photography. With his passion for social issues and personal development, he continues to make an impact in various areas.
